For me 2013 was a great year, I got a indefenite contract at my current employer doing a job I actually enjoy, my health has been fine as always and my sister and I are in the process of buying a house together.

I wish you all a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR.

May 2014 be the year in which all your dreams, wishes and needs come true.

And as for me, if 2014 is half as good as 2013 was, I'll be thrilled.

What sums up my life at the moment is an intense need for one of those lovely time turners. Unfortunately a time turner only exists in the Harry Potter books and I am stuck with only twenty-four hours a day. In other words, my life is very busy.

Currently I still have a job I enjoy. But my contract ends in March next year. So I am currently busy searching for a new job or a way to continue doing this job longer then March. But given the current state of the economy that is easier said than done. So that keeps me busy.

Between this month and the next, around 13 colleagues have found new jobs. I am really happy for them but it does keep those left behind very busy. Especially since the predicted slow period has not happened at all. Now my bank account is very happy with the hours I work, but me, not so much. I long for the days where I could leave work earlier because nobody was calling us at all!

But I realize that I should be thankful to still have a job and I am, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes I wish I had a bit more time on my hands.

I probably mentioned this before my long silence but I started research on my PhD. After a long while i finally found a topic that I am passionate about. I am focusing on three American writers who have traveled to China in the 1930s and later. Their names are Edgar Snow, Agnes Smedley and Anna Louise Strong. My theoretical framework is focused on travel writing, autobiography and cultural mediation. But I am having some trouble finding literature on the latter topic. If anybody knows of any good books about cultural mediation, please let me know!

The topic is fine and I am slowly moving forward with my research. Still sometimes I feel like I am going three ahead only to fall back two. Another situation where that time turner would come in handy. Alas, still not happening ;)

Enough with the whining about not having enough time though.
On to more enjoyable news. As of January 2013 my sister and I are the proud owners of a little black and white bunny we aptly named Spooky. He is really adorable and cute. He is very curious and loves to use your legs as a scratching post. He also enjoys running on the rug in our back room and he has already ruined the rug which now has several large holes in it. But we don’t care, he’s our little cute.
We are also house hunting. We have decided that it would be a good idea for me and my sister to buy a house for both us and our parents. But a house suitable for double living is not easy to find. We have one house in our sights right now but we are not the only people interested. Still we will not be rushing anything no matter how much our dad seems to be willing to move tomorrow.

This Saturday we will be visiting the village where the house is situated. We will be checking out the outside of the house and its surrounding to see if we like it. We especially want to see what the facilities are of the village. So that’s very exciting. But dad is driving us crazy with the rushing. He means well especially since the kind of houses that we are looking for do not come up every day.
So life so far is good.

What does keep me up a little is the fact that I am turning thirty this year. Yes, I know I am being a giant drama queen. That’s just me. Turning thirty makes me think about my life in general. In some aspects, I feel extraordinarily blessed. In other aspects I feel like I am missing something.
When it comes to family I am blessed, I have a great family, a great sister, a happy home, a cute bunny. I have a job I enjoy most of the time and am working on reaching my ultimate goal in life, teaching at the University by doing a PhD.

What I do not miss is having a boyfriend. I am happy single and I certainly don’t need a man to make me happy. But what I do miss sometimes is a job that will really challenge me intellectually. I like the job I do but it’s not exactly challenging me. But at the time I needed a job and this is what I got. No regrets most of the time but sometimes I want more. But I am working towards more. Hopefully in a few years I will have finished my PhD and then I can find a job as a teacher at a University.

All in all, I am not doing too bad. Sometimes I just get little distract. I will stop whining now because I feel like I have been making things a bit worse than they are in reality.
I recently bought the first and second season of Teen Wolf on DVD. Hope that will prove to be a good idea. I have heard quite a bit about this show and wanted to see for myself if it’s any good. Can’t wait until it gets here so we can start watching.

For those of you still reading, good for your! I wish you all the best and hope that you get whatever you want. On that note I will end this update.

As the most wonderful time of year is approaching, I want to take a few moments to reflect on the previous year. While I have not achieved as much as I had hoped, I feel that I have had a pretty good year. My health is okay, money wise things could be better, but I have a steady job, I have a wonderful sister and great parents and some good friends. I am thankful for them and for my professor who has given me the chance to continue my project.

With this said and done, I have one thing left to do.

I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to those who do not celebrate Christmas. May it be a time of happiness and good cheer for all of you.

May you all have a great start of teh New Year and may 2013 be the year all your dreams come true.

With all my love,

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action) And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA.  And tell them why you're buying their products in March.  There are many of them.

Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012
With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists.
The only way is to hit them where it hurts.
Their profit margins.
March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide.
Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.
Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent:
"We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."
